Singer and songwriter Sam Frederick Smith rose to prominence in 2012 after being featured on Disclosure’s breakthrough single, “Latch.” In 2014, Sam released “In the Lonely Hour,” his debut album, and the single “Stay with Me” was an international success, reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song reached number one in the United Kingdom. Although Sam hasn’t been in the entertainment industry for very long, he’s made a huge impact in a short time and won a significant number of awards. In addition to his four Grammy Awards, Sam has won an Academy Award for Best Original Song, an American Music Award, three Billboard Awards, a BET Award, three Brit Awards, and even a Golden Globe Award. Sam has also broken two Guinness World Records.
In addition to being phenomenally successful, Sam has made a name for himself as being a thoroughly approachable and down-to-earth celebrity. In January, he did something that everyone can only dream of. He surprised a wedding couple by showing up at their wedding to sing for them. In a recent TV special called “Sam Smith at the BBC,” Sam shared a clip of himself surprising two women who were getting married. Bec Baran and Lisa Best had no idea that Sam was going to show up at their wedding, but thanks to the planning and help of Best’s best woman and niece, Katie, Sam was able to make a surprise appearance at the lovely couple’s wedding reception.
He waited outside the reception hall as the newly married couple finished their first dance, then he heard his cue to enter. The DJ announced, “So, Lisa and Bec, it is time for the surprise of your married lives. With a little bit of help from Lisa’s best woman, we have been keeping a big secret from you,” announced the DJ. “Please welcome Sam Smith!” Sam greeted the brides with a huge hug and then performed “Latch.” What did the brides think of this? Best said, “This does not happen to us,” describing the moment that she realized that Sam Smith really was singing at her wedding. Best said that all of her family and friends were equally shocked. She described it as “just another level.”

After the performance, Sam wished them a happy marriage and a big congratulations, saying, “I saw the ceremony in London and it moves my heart so much to see you guys do this today. I truly hope you have a wonderful, wonderful life together. Thank you for having me here.” Sam said that just being a part of someone’s special day means the world to him, adding that “they’re so in love and it’s so beautiful.” This is something cool about being famous, making someone’s day like this.
