Most of us can name songs on our playlists just by hearing the opening few notes, especially if we’ve listened to the song hundreds of times. We don’t think about his skill very often, but it actually plays a very important role in helping people with brain illnesses such as Alzheimers and dementia retrieve memories. A neuroscience research project called Music & Memory uses music to tap deep into deep memories in patients. The therapy does more than just help them remember one of their favorite tunes; it also helps them socialize, converse, and stay in the present longer. Music therapy also proves useful for people suffering from other ailments, such as emotional or mental health issues.
And the benefits to kids who learn how to play music in school is also impressive. Kids develop better self-esteem, listening skills, math skills, language skills, better test scores, stress relief skills, creativity, and music also helps special needs children learn. Music is an art form that can touch our lives even before we are born, as research suggests that mothers who expose their unborn children to music in the womb can actually make their babies happier and healthier. In this video, Pharrell Williams and Jimmy Fallon play a game known as the Name That Song Challenge.
The objective of the game is for either Jimmy or Pharrell to hit their buzzer to identify a song being played by the Tonight Show band, The Roots. However, the band only plays a part in the song, one instrument at a time—the person who can figure out the song the quickest wins.
