There’s nothing like ’70s television. It was really a revolutionary time for TV if you think about it. Before the 70s, most programs were so tame and safe; they were kind of boring. Even many of the shows before the 70s were in black and white. But with the 70s, everything was in color, and many of the programs had attitude. You had those big, beautifully ugly sets with some of the most awful looking designs and furniture you’d ever seen. Keep in mind; this was during a time when many families still enjoyed eating jello with meat in it for dinner.
Two of my favorite shows from the 70s were the Carol Burnet Show, and the Match Game. Both shows ran on the same network, and one day producers decided to have Carol and her insane friends invade The Match Game. What would follow is some of the funniest TV that would never happen in a million years today. In fact, I think there was a good case for a lawsuit within the first minute. In the video, Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Carol’s “good luck charm” Jim Nabors, stroll right onto the set of the Match Game with Nabors looking around like a lost tourist.
No later than 20 or 30 seconds after she arrives, Mr. Kissy himself Richard Dawson grabs Caroll and gives her a big smack on the lips. One of the funniest parts was when the host Gene Rayburn tries the same move, and Carol turns her head! Eventually, things settle down a bit as Rayburn sits the unruly bunch on the floor and has them join in on the game, handing each person a sharpie and paper.
They had to fill in the word for the following sentence: “Gloria said my husband, the bomber pilot is always practicing, he even yells ‘bombs away!’ when he’s BLANKING.” Folks, the look on Carol’s face after he said that was positively priceless!
