Patrick Swayze will always be an ’80s Icon for millions of fans who simply loved this strikingly the strikingly handsome Hollywood heartthrob. The actor had a style all his own and did not play by the conventional rules that many played by. He was also an accomplished dancer and an incredible singer. And for his legendary movie “Dirty Dancing,” he managed to combine all three of his gifts to create an unforgettable cinematic experience that more and more new fans are discovering for the first time each year. While most remember Swayze’s incredible dancing alongside his co-star Jennifer Grey, he also sang a beautiful song that was featured in the film and is on its soundtrack called “She’s Like the Wind.”
In 1984, Swayze co-wrote the song with Stacy Widelitz, a good friend and Nashville composer. Shortly thereafter, he recorded the song with singer Wendy Fraser. Initially, the song was going to be on the soundtrack for a film called “Grandview, U.S.A.” The song was written for a character in the movie played by Jamie Lee Curtis. However, the producers of the movie chose to go with a different choice. But, during the production of Dirty Dancing, Swayze played the song for producer Linda Gottlieb and director Emilie Ardolino, who both loved it. After it’s release, the song rose on the Billboard charts to #3 in the U.S. and #17 in the U.K.
The music video for the song was shot using dreamlike effects, which shows scenes from Dirty Dancing with shots of Swayze fading in and out while singing. The video was really quite brilliant, as it really emoted a dreamlike feel that matched the lyrics perfectly. As a song, “She’s Like the Wind,” certainly stands as one of the great love ballads of the ’80s.
