Nobody likes it when things don’t exactly go according to plan in their lives, such as when we trip over our shoes or miss that bottom step. However, whether we want to admit it or not, watching other people experience similar misfortune draws a laugh out of us, even as we’re feeling terrible for laughing. “People don’t like to admit to schadenfreude,” says Princeton psychology professor Susan Fiske. “It’s a little humiliating, but it’s a very human response.” That’s right, folks, it’s entirely human to have a little chuckle at another’s expense — so long as you don’t be a jerk about it and help them up.
And if there’s one thing we really love to see when we’re watching our favorite game show is when folks screw up or say something embarrassing. Or, when the show has some sort of “technical glitch.” Those moments when the host and contestants can’t stop laughing are just the best! One of my favorite game shows growing up was The Match Game, it wasn’t as popular as many, but when it came to humor how could you beat a show with Betty White in the cast? While the game has had many incarnations, my favorite was the 1973 to 1982 version with host Gene Rayburn.
