There are certain songs that reach a level of popularity and when they reach it, it is almost as if everybody could sing along with it. From the time we are little children, we may have heard the song playing and it may be decades-old, or perhaps even centuries old. Some of those songs may fade in popularity over time but others just seem to become more popular, and they may even continue to play on the radio. Sometimes, those songs may even be incredibly popular but people don’t know who originally sang them.
One of the songs that I would say most people could sing along with is ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. It has been performed in so many different movies and at so many different functions that the original singers have become somewhat of a blur. It doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve the recognition for coming up with the song, and their rendition of the music is obviously going to always hold a place in our heart. Even though we may have heard many other people singing it, knowing who the original was can help enhance our appreciation of the music.
The original performers of The Lion Sleeps Tonight were The Tokens. The song is decades-old, but it is still a classic that most of us enjoy. When you hear The Tokens performing it, you instantly recognize the voices and the blending that takes place as they all come together for a unified purpose.
Although there may be some of the original performers that are no longer touring with the group, the group itself is still on the road. If you would like to see a bit of living history, perhaps you could check out one of their concerts when they come to your area. Until that time, you can enjoy watching them perform the song live in the following video:
