Abandoned Baby Possum Adopted By Beagle Mom Who Lost Her Puppies

If you happen to have a dog in your life, you don’t need anyone to tell you just how awesome they can be. It doesn’t matter how they come to be in our family, they quickly wrapped themselves around our hearts and it isn’t long before they are with us every time we are nearby. They greet us when we come home after a difficult day and they watch over us while we are sleeping at night. It’s an amazing relationship and those of us with dogs would never have it any other way.

As it turns out, it’s not only humans who benefit from the loyalty and love of a faithful dog, other animals can benefit from it as well. This is especially true when the dog has a mothering instinct, which tends to run very strong in canines. They want to protect their young and sometimes, they are willing to protect the young of other animals just the same. That is what Molly the beagle was willing to do and when you see her ‘baby’, you will be a believer.

It all started when Molly lost a litter of puppies only days after they were born.

Elle and Sara Moyle are happy to call Molly a part of their family. They live together in Victoria, Australia. That is where Molly found an abandoned baby possum and immediately, the possum climbed up on her back and held on. Ever since then, they have been together.

“They’re an unlikely pair,” Elle said. “I think that possum thought that Molly was her mother and vice versa.”

It doesn’t matter how unusual it may sound, it seems as if they were just meant to be together. Sarah said that Molly and ‘Poss’ have a need for each other because they both experienced a strong loss.

Molly loves being a surrogate mother. The possum sleeps during the day and according to Elle: “Molly just sits under the tree where she’s sleeping and just waits for her.”

When they are both awake at the same time, you will find Poss hitching a ride on Molly’s back. The dog doesn’t mind at all!

Nobody is really sure how long they will stick together, especially after Poss is grown. For now, however, they are enjoying life side-by-side.
