When you look around at some of the many beautiful sea life out there, there are few as entertaining and playful as the Steller sea lion. But, these creatures are not just playful and bright; they are also very, very big animals. You see, a female sea lion can grow up to six feet in length and weigh as much as 220 pounds. Meanwhile, the males grow up to seven feet long and weigh up to 850 pounds! On top of everything, these creatures are a part of the otariid seal family, so they dog-like faces, cute little ear flaps, and large flippers which allow them to walk on land. If you’ve ever been to a zoo or aquarium and seen a “seal” perform, it was likely a trained sea lion.
Steller Sea Lions are often mistaken for California sea lions, which are usually much smaller. And you can find these big, beautiful mammals all over the West coast. Not too long ago, a man named Joshua Phillips was on a boat sailing on Puget Sound, off the coast of Washington, and witnessed something a bit out of the ordinary. Joshua saw a massive pair of sea lions just chilling on a tiny boat. It appears that the fun-loving creatures wanted to give their tired flippers a rest and decided to “charter” a vessel to do a little sightseeing. As you’ve probably noticed, the tiny boat doesn’t appear that it was designed to support the awesomeness of these sea lions.
Joshua probably knew that if he told the story to anyone, they probably wouldn’t believe him, so he whipped out his phone and started filming. Here’s the video below.
Josh took this video today in Eld Inlet. Nearing 5 million views…..crazy! @fishingjosh on Instagram! www.spawnflyfish.com
