What is the image that comes to your mind when you think about Volkswagen? There have been many different styles over the years but the classic Beetle is perhaps the most popular. It’s an unusual car, small, adorable and very popular. Consumers from around the world have enjoyed driving it and, although it has gone in and out of production, it is still something that you can find on the road down to this day.
The newer versions of the Volkswagen Beetle are more modern and a little bit sleeker looking than the classic shape has been maintained. You will see many of them on the road but when you do see them, they often have some of the unusual colors in comparison with other vehicles. After all, you don’t often see orange or yellow cars that aren’t little Volkswagens!
The Beetle was also a compact vehicle so it may come as a surprise to you that in the 1970s, there was a company in California that converted them into campers. The car itself is not really any bigger than an average tent, so you might be wondering what one of these vehicles looked like inside and out.
This is a Super Bugger that is owned by Keith and Glenna Spelrum. That is the name that was given to the Beetle-RV hybrid vehicle. The show where this vehicle was on display had about 1000 unusual cars but this one drew the biggest crowds. Everybody had questions, and they are best answered with pictures.
There is a little living area behind the front seats that includes a table, two bench seats, a small kitchen, and other options. The one thing that is lacking is a place to sleep.
Can you imagine taking this little camper with you on a road trip? You don’t have to stop at a restaurant or even find a picnic table. Just enjoy your lunch in the best way possible.
In 1975, the Super Bugger campers were made out of the 1968 model of the Volkswagen Beetle. It would cost about $6000 to have the conversion done. An engine was taken out of a VW bus and it would get up to 55 mph at the top speed. The gas mileage is also fairly decent, at about 25 miles per gallon.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a road trip.
