There certainly is a lot of interesting wildlife in the world around us. You might think about having to travel to various places on other continents in order to see exotic wildlife but in reality, it often exists in our own backyard. When we take the opportunity to really stop and look at what exists in our own area, it can open our eyes to the beauty that the world has to offer. Sometimes, we may even find that we get a surprise or two.
I’d like to introduce you to Pinky, a pink dolphin of legendary status. She has been around Louisiana for years and when people see her, they are amazed at her beautiful, unique skin color. Imagine what you would do if you were boating in Louisiana and suddenly, a pink dolphin jumped in the water next to you. I can only imagine that it would be a nice surprise.
Dolphins typically will have a pink belly but if a dolphin is completely pink, it is a rare sight. It is thought that pink dolphins are albinos, a condition where they do not produce enough chemicals that keep their skin gray. Pinky may have an unusual skin color and her eyes may not open completely but other than that, she is a normal dolphin.
Pinky’s gender has generally gone unnoticed but recently, they were able to confirm what people thought all along. The assumption was that she was a female because of her color. Recently, however, they got to see her in action during mating season.
A charter boat captain, Erik Rue took pictures of her swimming in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He has been watching the dolphin off and on since 2007 and sometimes, she will even come within 10 feet of his boat. He finally figured things out in 2015, discovering that Pinky is, in fact, a female.
“I’ve taken a ton of pictures of her mating and it proved she’s a female,” he told ABC News. “I believe I’m first one who saw her and I know I’m the first one to take pictures of her.”
The mystery has finally been solved but now we may have a new ministry, Pinky may be pregnant. This could prove to be interesting.
