April 7 probably came and went without you really giving it much thought but it is actually one of the coolest days of the year. It is International beaver day and many people took the time to celebrate an animal that has helped us in more ways than one. Admittedly, beavers are not an endangered species but they do help with the ecosystem and they are absolutely adorable.
If you live in an area where streams flow nearby, you may have come across a beaver who was busy doing some engineering work. They benefit the entire ecosystem in the area, increasing the flow of the steam when it is seasonably dry and helping the runoff when things are in the rainy season. They even help many other animals who enjoy the habitat that they create.
There is also a coolness factor because beavers were used by the US government. Back in the 1930s, streams in Oregon were having a big problem with soil erosion and 600 beavers were put to work. They were very effective at what they did and were worth quite a lot to the government back then.
