Six friends stood on a lush green trail high in the Chilean mountains. They smiled for a quick snapshot to document their afternoon outdoors. Other hikers trailed behind them in the distance under the open sky.
It seemed like a simple souvenir from a pleasant day in nature. The lighting was bright and the group looked completely relaxed. Nothing about the scene suggested anything out of the ordinary was taking place.

Ghosts
The image eventually found its way online to the r/whenyouseeit community on Reddit. Users scrolled past expecting a routine puzzle or subtle trick of light. Nobody expected a genuine chill down their spine.
Zooming into the background reveals a disturbing detail nestled near the left side. Positioned between two women in the group is an extra head peering out. A dark silhouette appears to lurk right in the middle of the frame.
A shadow forms what looks like a pale face staring directly at the lens.
Human brains are hardwired to spot human features in random shapes and dark shadows. This mind phenomenon is known to science as pareidolia. It makes us see phantom features on dusty cars or ancient rock faces.
When light shifts through mountain foliage, natural patterns easily trick human eyes. Contrast adjustments or heavy photo filters make ordinary shadows look like pale skin. Optical illusions often thrive in these quiet spaces between bright daylight and dark shade.
The haunting discovery instantly sparked intense debate across the entire message board.
One user wrote, “I am not exaggerating when I say that when I finally saw it, I got goosebumps and felt genuine fear. What the f***. I believe in ghosts again now.”
Another added, “My dumba** was looking at the red thing in the bottom left corner. I was like, ‘Uhhh, looks like someone was just cut out the pic…’ Then BOOM, I saw it. Runs to hide under the covers.”
A third person commented, “That is the creepiest thing! I did not expect that!”
Skeptics quickly stepped in to offer a more grounded explanation for the ghostly figure.
One person suggested, “It’s just a person that’s also in the group with their face being hidden in shadow by the two around it, and made to look creepy with that intense blue filter.”
The commenter pointed out that you can even see the top of the person’s head and hair illuminated normally by the daylight.
A harsh blue tint and harsh shadows combined to create an accidental monster.
However, not everyone was willing to dismiss the unsettling sight as a simple shadow.
Another Redditor said, “It gave me chills, for sure. Usually, I just laugh these things off or assume the photo is doctored in a way I can’t really detect, but not this time.”
The user continued, “And once you see it, you can’t try to make it be something else, like the way the guy’s jacket is bunched up, or a combination of that and part of the hair from one of the girls. Nothing else fits.”
They concluded with a warning that it is very clearly something or someone that does not belong there.
Whether an extra hiker or a trick of light, the picture keeps spreading online.
