The World Watched Her Mourn Her Famous Ex But Her Next Move Caught Everyone Off Guard

The Montana sky stretched wide over the city of Missoula on Saturday, May 30. It was supposed to be a weekend of pure celebration.

Actress Heather McComb stood in her favorite place, ready to step into a brand new chapter of her life. She was 49 years old and about to say ‘I do’ to fellow actor Scott Michael Campbell.

They chose an outdoor ceremony surrounded by mountains and a massive bridal party. McComb looked out at 13 bridesmaids dressed up and ready to support her.

Campbell had 12 groomsmen standing by his side. It looked like the perfect picture of Hollywood romance moved out to the beautiful wilderness.

The sound of wedding bells could not fully erase the echo of a final goodbye.

But a quiet heaviness anchored the celebration. Only three months earlier, the world changed for McComb. Her former husband, James Van Der Beek, died on Feb 11 at just 48 years old.

The beloved Dawson’s Creek star lost his public battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.

They had lived through a major chapter together during the height of his teenage television fame. McComb and Van Der Beek walked the red carpets as a married couple from 2003 until 2010. When the news of his passing broke she felt completely shattered.

The sudden shift from deep mourning to a marriage altar left the public watching closely.

She quickly shared an old photograph from her 21st birthday back before his hit show even premiered. It was her way of holding onto the innocent and kind version of the man she once loved.

The actress spoke openly about her grief before she ever put on a wedding dress. She openly stated thank you for everyone who has reached out.

“I appreciate and feel all your love. I am heartbroken over the loss of beloved James. I am especially heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly, his beautiful children and his amazing family, Jim, Jared, Juliana and all of his family and friends who I know he loved deeply.”

The fast arrival of May meant carrying that heavy heartache directly into her new vows.

The ceremony went ahead under the covenant of God with McComb’s own sister officiating the marriage. The couple gathered everyone they loved most into the mountain valley to witness the union. Afterward the actress shared her joy on Instagram to update fans.

She wrote our hearts are full and humbled by all of the love that we were surrounded by. God is so good. Thank you to all of our family and friends who traveled from all over the country to be with us. Thank you Jesus the way maker miracle worker.

The celebration lasted all weekend but the memories of the past remained deeply rooted.

Van Der Beek had long since moved on to build a massive family with his second wife Kimberly, welcoming six children named Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah. Yet McComb insisted their decades of connection never truly faded out.

Before stepping toward her new husband, she made sure to honor the last loving words she shared with her first. The music faded into the Montana hills as the newlyweds started their lives together. They sat together counting their many blessings.
