Norwegian Students Shock Everyone With Bohemian Rhapsody Singalong

A video online shows an auditorium packed with Norwegian senior high students suddenly singing Bohemian Rhapsody together. According to the note that came with the clip, the moment happened on the first day of the 2019 school year, and it was described as completely spontaneous.

That claim makes people pause for a second because the crowd seems unusually ready. Almost everyone joins in immediately, like they have known the song for years. It leaves viewers wondering how a whole room of teenagers manages to remember every lyric.

There are a few possible explanations floating around. The students may have learned the song earlier through school music lessons, so the melody and lyrics were already familiar when someone started playing it again in the auditorium that day.

Another thought is that the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody brought the band back into the spotlight. That movie pushed Queen’s music into the public conversation again, and it likely introduced the song to plenty of younger listeners who might not have known it before.

Whatever the reason, most of the students clearly feel comfortable singing along. English is not their first language, yet the lyrics seem to roll out easily for most of the room. Only a handful of students glance down at their phones while the rest keep going.

Near the front, four students appear to guide the crowd with small hand motions while the singing continues. They seem to help keep everyone together as the famous sections of the song move from one part to the next.

Some viewers also noticed something else about the clip, which is how clean the footage looks. That raised questions about how spontaneous the moment really was, since the camera quality seems a bit too good for a random recording.

One explanation is that the event involved the school’s music, dance, or drama students. If that is the case, cameras might normally be used during those gatherings anyway, either to review performances later or as part of the coursework.

When the video from Rud Senior High School appeared online in August 2019, it spread quickly. The clip picked up attention across social media, and eventually the band Queen shared it through their own accounts.

One blog highlighted the teacher at the piano and wrote, “He is so skilled that he can keep an eye on the kids just as well as his quick fingers. He makes eye contact with the crowd, sings along, cracks jokes, bangs his head, and brings the entire performance to a satisfactory conclusion. Everyone ought to have a teacher like that at least once!”

People watching online also left plenty of reactions under the video. One commenter wrote, “Was it perfect? He** no. Was it great? He** YES!!!” which pretty much summed up the general mood surrounding the performance.

Scenes like this are not unique to that school either. Large crowds have been known to break into Bohemian Rhapsody before concerts as well, including before a Harry Styles show in Cardiff on June 21, 2023.

Bohemian Rhapsody was first released in 1975 and remains one of Queen’s most recognizable songs. Even decades later it still pops up in moments like this, where a crowd suddenly starts singing together without much encouragement. RIP Freddie Mercury.
